Abstract

Each hardening process causes residual stresses and changes in dimension and shape of the workpiece. Experimental techniques allow the determination of residual stresses and distortion after cooling. Numerical simulation of the process using the finite element method (FEM) calculates temperature-, stress- and deformation fields for any geometry throughout the process and therefore provides a clear comprehension of the mechanisms involved. The variation of different process parameters allows the separation of their influences on the development of stresses and deformations. The present paper shows the results of the simulation of temperature-controlled laser-beam hardening using a commercial software code and compares them with experimental data. A sufficient agreement is found between the calculated residual stresses and distortions and observed ones.
