Abstract

This paper researches the economic concentration process in the French publishing industry from 2000 – 2013. It is based on an extensive industry analysis – in this case Michael E. Porters five forces model – of the whole French publishing industry, including all relevant stakeholders and their special needs. The second focal point is the corporate structure and historical development from owner-operated publishing houses to international media-conglomerates of the two French market leaders Hachette livre and Editis. By using examples from the three different concentration levels (horizontal, vertical and diagonal concentration), the concentration process will be shown within the development of these two companies. Their importance for the whole French publishing sector and the proceeding concentration progress will be proven by turnover figures in the observation period (2001-2012). This data, imposed by the journal livres Hebdo, was revised and edited by the author. Based on the market share development and the number of market participants during the observation period, a proceeding concentration process within the French publishing industry could be proven. Moreover, this paper gives a critical examination of the available data and data sources at the time of the writing of this text.
