Abstract

Accumulating electrical energy in decentralized electrical grids is a demanding task. Preliminary works exist on charging and discharging Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC). These carriers allow for storage of hydrogen by reversible hydrogenation of an aromatic compound. A challenge is the fact that the chemical process has to be conducted within the power generating infrastructure, therefore a continuous and fully automatized implementation is mandatory. In this work the fundamentals of the control and automatization of LOHC based energy storage systems is presented. For this purpose the identification of the controlled variable is done, before determining their influence on the reaction dynamics. This concludes to a fully automatized hydrogenation process whereby the conductibility of the reaction, the performance and the necessity of applying safe and functional operation modes, are shown. Derived from that, the investigations will help establishing LOHC as feasible hydrogen carriers and doing a decisive step to mid and long term energy storage systems suitable to a modern smart grid infrastructure.
