Abstract

The treatment of C with the tertiary amine 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene results in the formation of a diamagnetic zwitterion salt [DBU]C. This addition reaction was monitored in solution by UV/VIS/NIR and ESR spectroscopy. It is shown that in the first step a single electron transfer occurs leading to the C monoradical anion and the DBU radical cation. In a subsequent step [DBU]C is formed upon a radical recombination process. The represented results give evidence for the reaction mechanism of the nucleophilic amine additions to C proposed earlier. © 1994.
