Abstract

A study of spherical aromaticity of fullerenes was carried out. The fullerenes form a unique class of spherical molecules containing π system. The classical criteria for aromaticity of planar, unsaturated compounds were applied to fullerenes and their derivatives. The nature of fullerene aromaticity considering count rules involving the whole π-electron system and the presence of two-dimensional Hückel-aromatic substructures were also discussed.
