Abstract

Particular challenges faced by the automotive industry are the increasing product variety and complexity caused by customer requirements in terms of individualization. The resulting large number of development projects can often not be realized in particular by small and medium enterprises due to staff shortages. In case of resource bottlenecks companies have the option to award projects to external service providers. The goal of the present paper is to define a holistic decision making process for awarding development projects because of staff shortages. For this purpose an appropriate and detailed process will be developed that standardizes the outsourcing procedures and provides methodological support for practical use. As a result, critical factors will be considered and consequently the success rate of awarding projects will be increased. Finally, the suitability of the proposed approach is validated in an industrial case study.
