Abstract

The article deals with the narrative coherence of the Nibelungenlied. It argues that the Lied uses a specific poetic technique to cope with its evident motivationallacunae. While its narrative logic of the histoire is aporetic and abstruse again and again, the narrator frequently succeeds in making his story (at least partly) plausible by enriching these very same fragile passages with figurative (e. g. metaphorical, allegorical) elements. They seem to conserve an 'older' narrative logic of the Nibelungian story, which is strictly banished from the literal plot of the Lied, thus forming 'poetic dissonances' with regard to the events taking place. These 'poetic dissonances' seem to constitute a vital structure of Nibelungenlied poetics. The main examples discussed in the article are: the use of the colour white in the Isenstein episode, buhurten at Worms, and Siegfried's nocturnal battle with Brünhild.
