Selective electron beam melting (SEBM) of metal powders offers not only the typical advantages of additive manufacturing like freedom of design and no necessity of dies, but additionally processing under vacuum conditions. This is particularly advantageous when using (oxygen) sensitive materials like titanium. Furthermore, the nearly inertia free and rapid beam deflection (up to 10.000 m/s) offer the possibility for novel scanning strategies to influence the solidification behavior of the materials. With suitable selection of processing parameters, the geometry and size of the generated melt pool can be regulated. Thus solidification kinetics can be adjusted locally by specifically influencing the thermal gradients. As an example the microstructure of the nickel based superalloy Inconel 718 can be altered between columnar and equiaxed grain structure by varying the scanning parameters. Furthermore, evaporation of light elements like aluminum can be avoided. In the case of the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V the amount of aluminum loss during interaction between the electron beam and the powder can be reduced locally to induce controlled adjustment of the material properties. In this contribution, processing of Ti-6Al-4V and IN718 is investigated in a broad parameter range, focusing on low scan line spacings and their effect on chemical composition and microstructure.
