Abstract

There has been a steady rise of global sourcing practices within firms. A resource-based view model is used to empirically investigate how internal availability of resources and capabilities of the firm affects sourcing in low-cost countries. After a short introduction to the context and relevance of the research topic, the theoretical background of the resource-based view is detailed. Based on this, further literature as well as expert interviews, the constructs, hypotheses and the overall research model are presented. The empirical analysis is based on a survey. The survey data were gathered through structured telephone interviews with Chief Procurement Officers and Purchasing Managers of 156 large-sized companies in five European countries, part of a larger Low Cost Country Sourcing research project. They were analyzed with PLS (Partial Least Squares). The results show that as hypothesized, the availability of internal sourcing resources and capabilities has a high influence on what is sourced externally, with a positive impact on quality, time, costs and market performance.
