Abstract


Due to growing demands for high functional integration, lightweight-design as well as shorter innovation cycles computer-based simulation techniques, such as FEA (Finite Element Analyses), has become an essential part in automotive development. However, an efficient use of FEA requires early application in the development process. Furthermore, extensive specialist knowledge is a crucial prerequisite to perform reliable simulations. Due to time constraints, design accompanying FEA are performed too rarely by experienced simulation engineers or, if they are applied by non-expert simulation users, are not sufficiently accurate. Thus, a knowledge-based FEA assistance system is presented, to provide the necessary expert knowledge as a function of decisive factors such as the phase in the development process, applied manufacturing processes and analyzed components. The assistance system automates the setup, interpretation and plausibility check of early applied simulations on the basis of the existing CAD (Computer Aided Design) working environment of design engineers, exemplarily implemented for steel construction and die-cast aluminum gear box housings.
