Abstract

Micritic limestones are very widespread but the micritic part of limestone is usually treated as a matrix and not paid much attention. In particular little is known about the formation of Paleozoic micritic limestones. The Silurian on Gotland is of particular interest for the study of carbonate rocks since the conditions here favour their preservation. An investigation was made of 18 profiles and 600 individual samples from the micritic limestone - marl sequences, which are interrupted by complex reef formations. The samples were subjected to scanning electron microscopy to determine their composition and structure and to reconstruct their origin and diagenesis. In addition the geochemical parameters were investigated. It was concluded that the micritic limestone - marl sequences on Gotland had originated from carbonate ooze which originally consisted of aragonitic, calcitic and terrigenous material. Lithification occurred in a very limited zone just below the seabed. The primary composition of the reef rocks could not be determined definitely due to diagenetic changes.
