Abstract

Experimental investigations have been carried out to enlarge the knowledge on the dynamic and static behavior and strength limits of post insulators. The tests were carried out with a mass-spring-system producing the same initial time function of bending loads as worst-case short-circuit forces. The response of nearly one hundred insulators to dynamic or static loading was evaluated statistically and described in terms of strains, displacements and forces as functions of momentary loading, location and time. The tests are supported by finite element analysis. The assessment of strength must be based on ultimate strains. Measured values are nearly in agreement for static and dynamic loading. Measurement data are indispensable for a reduction of the real insulator to an analytical or structural model.
