Abstract

The term ›Literary Events in the Digital Age‹ suggests that literary events are subjected to change due to shifting conditions. This leads to the question to what extent literary events are still contemporary in an age in which people are increasingly establishing digital networks. ›Tale-telling at the campfire‹ is borrowed from a characterisation of readings made by Charles Dickens, referring to the encounter of author and audience, which featured a homely atmosphere although taking place in large meeting places. Many things have changed from Charles Dickens’s readings in the 19th century to literary events in the present; regarding not only the participating actors and their interactions, but also the way in which literary events are presented. The interdisciplinary conference Tale-Telling at the Campfire. Literary events in the digital age, which took place in the Kulturzentrum E-Werk in Erlangen on the 19th and 20th February 2014, looked into this topic. This volume presents two central ideas which emerged during the conference: the eventful character of various literary events and the altered apparatuses.
