Scientific publishers are the interface between science and the scientific or non-scientific public. Accordingly, publishers and science are closely interdependent. However, the relevant research shows several desiderata. Apart from exploring the author-publisher-relationship or the discipline-specific development of science communication, the research has been missing a more detailed analysis of the impact of scientific developments on the work of scientific publishers. The following thesis will catch up on that. Thus the focus of the system-theoretical study is to examine to which extent the loss of position and reputation for the German scientific system, affected German scientific publishers and their global transactions between 1933 and 1945. By examining individual German science publishers and their journal production, it was shown that the developments in the national and international scientific community had lasting consequences for the German publishing landscape and its former leading role in international academic and scientific publishing. In addition, it was illustrated, which strategic options remained for German publishers in order to respond to these changes in the national and international scientific community. Specifically the reactions of scientific publishers in extreme situations opened a new perspective on the issue of the dependency-relationship between science and science publisher, which deserves further exploration.
