Abstract

After several BBC adaptations and Bridget Jones' obsession with Colin Firth's wet shirt, the unbroken Jane Austen-cult has recently been spiced up by Anglo-Asian director Gurinder Chadha in her Bride and Prejudice (2004). With her relocation of Austen's Pride and Prejudice to contemporary India and L.A., Chadha does more than simply turn the very English original into a lavish Bollywood version starring Bollywood icon Aishwarya Rai. This paper argues that apart from turning a classic novel into a Bollywood musical with the typical mixture of songs, dances, drama and flirtation, she also blends Bollywood and Hollywood romance, thus exploring both the different norms and similarities of two of the world's most influential film industries.
