Abstract

Rational and efficient conversion of methane to more useful higher hydrocarbons is an important topic in natural gas utilization. Today, methane activation is mostly carried out in an indirect way via transformation of methane to syngas (a mixt. of CO and hydrogen) which then is converted into higher hydrocarbons by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis or via methanol. A true alternative for indirect methane conversion is the use of chloromethane as the activated intermediate. In our labs. chloromethane has been found to react with Ga(0) suspended in an ionic liq./molten salt medium with very high selectivities (up to 97% of gaseous products) to isobutane. During the reaction hydrogen and anionic chlorogallate species of Ga(I) and Ga(III) are formed. The latter can be regenerated to Ga(0) electrochem. in a subsequent step using the molten salt medium as electrolyte. The chlorine liberated in the Ga(0) regeneration can be applied for the synthesis of the chloromethane feedstock from methane thus making this new reaction the potential key-step of a fundamentally new process chain for methane valorization.
