Abstract


The invention discloses a method for prepn. of mononitrated arom. compds. in a liq.-liq. biphasic solvent system with aq. nitric acid as one phase and ionic liqs. (ILs) as the second phase, wherein the nitric acid is continuously exchanged during the reaction, or the water, that is generated during the reaction, is removed by addn. of NO2 and an oxidizing agent (oxygen or air) during the reaction. The ionic liq. is selected from the group consisting of nitrate, hydrogen sulfonate, methanesulfonate, 1,1,2,2,tetrafkuoroethanesulfonate and trifluoromethanesulfonate of N+R1R2R3R4 [R1 and R2 are identical or different and independently from each other C1-14-alkyl; R3 is C4-14-alkyl; R4 is C4-14-alkyl or C1-14-alkyl-SO3H; with the proviso, that the total no. of carbons in R1, R2, R3 and R4 is at least 16; and, with proviso, that if R1 and R2 are C1-2-alkyl then R3 and R4 are C10-14-alkyl] and P+R1R2R3R4. Thus, PhMe was nitrated with aq. HNO3 in Bu4N+NO3- to give 39% 2-, 3-, and 4-nitrotoluene (1:0.09:0.64). [on SciFinder(R)]
