We used inverse photoemission and impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy to study the dynamical behaviour of the Cu(110)-(2 x 1)O surface. In contrast to the clean Cu(110) surface, we find a linear increase of the mean square displacements of the copper surface atoms with temperature, which can be described by a Debye temperature of 240 K in agreement with surface phonon calculations. An explanation might be that the adsorption of oxygen removes the surface stress present on the clean Cu(110) surface and leads to a quite stable bond configuration.
