Abstract

Using panel estimation methods, we assess the impact of electricity generation from renewable energy sources on economic growth in the MENA region, and we identify variables explaining differences in renewable electricity deployment in the region. Our results show that the effect of increasing renewable electricity generation on growth is positive, while capacity expansion has no significant effect on growth. Renewable electricity deployment is mainly explained by differences in oil and gas reserves, with a higher usage of renewables in those countries highly dependent on imports of conventional fuels, and by a sound financial system with negligible government intervention. These results suggest that for MENA countries, to capture a larger share of benefits associated with renewable energy deployment, policymakers should enhance investments in this emerging sector.
