Abstract

Practice and theory proved the potential of energy cooperatives successfully shaping the energy turnaround through civic participation. However, little research has been conducted on sustainable financing concepts for energy cooperatives that cooperatives can exploit to cope with the demographic, financial and image related issues. The aim of the present study is therefore to investigate the potential of crowdfunding. Hence, a qualitative study design based on expert interviews with representatives of energy cooperatives was chosen to deduce recommendations for its utilization within an energy cooperative. The results show that although most cooperatives are not familiar with crowdfunding, strong potentials lie in opening the predominantly local structures for a broader group of members. Building on this, equity based crowdfunding revealed to be suitable for energy cooperatives as a financial add-on and to accompany other challenges in the same way.
