Abstract

In this contribution we present a novel residence time micro reactor with integrated thermal mass flow sensor network for the inline analysis of homogeneously catalyzed esterification reactions on micro scale. The micro reactor design was optimized for low throughput micro plants used in chemical micro process engineering. The sensor network consists of six thermal mass flow sensors based on the thermo-transfer principle (calorimeter) for monitoring relative changes in the isobaric heat capacity during chemical conversion. Multiple in series connected sensors enable the separation of flow pulsation effects even in the two phase regime. Differences in sensor transduction behavior were determined using non reactive liquids with well known and thermal properties. As chemical model system for the characterization of the thermal sensor network we chose the homogeneously catalyzed synthesis of butyl acetate. The esterification was processed in a micro plant with varying reactor capillary length in between each pair of sensors. Focus was on the change in isobaric heat capacity during chemical conversion as a function of residence time and phase transition effects. Furthermore, the achievable measurement sensitivity and the minimization of flow pulsation effects with differential sensor signal analysis was investigated.
