Abstract

In Germany, for nearly 40 years the first stage of the teacher training program has basically been offered at universities and colleges. Students' graduation for the teaching profession is a public examination conducted by the state examination authorities or boards of the “Länder”. In compliance with the “Bologna-process” (i.e. new European standards for tertiary education) the structures of the teacher training programs will also be adapted to the structures of the bachelor- and master study courses. Changes in methodical implementation and content areas are required. A topical position paper of the Ministries of Education frames this process (KMK, 2004): The requirements for teachers' tertiary education are (1) teaching, (2) evaluation, (3) innovation, (4) counselling and (5) education. With regard to this position paper the German University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is designing a new tool meant to modify and optimize teacher training in German universities.
