Abstract

The properties of powder injection molded graphite for tribiology applications, where the mechanical properties of the injection molded graphite can already compete with conventional pressed qualities in the early stage of development. Mesocarbon microbead powder with an average grain size of 6μm was compounded with approximately 30wt% water and 6 wt% agar and some additives to tailor gel strength and viscosity. The drying process was carried out in a climatic chamber, in order to ensure reproducibility, where the dried green bodies were subsequently sintered in a tube furnace under argon flow up to a temperature of 1000° C. The influence of the heat treatment temperature is clearly visible: with increasing heat treatment temperature the coefficient of friction decreases, and further observations were made while examining the surface of the graphite samples. The production capabilities of the injection molding process, was found to be cost saving due to the net shape compared to standard coke.
