Abstract

Two extreme microstructural variants of alloy ATI718PLUS® were investigated regarding their tensile strength, creep resistance, long-term stability, oxidation and crack growth properties. The variants were produced by supersolvus and subsolvus forging procedures. A subsolvus forging produces fine-grained microstructure with aligned blocky secondary η-phase. The supersolvus forging generated a coarser grain size with improved creep performance and non-aligned lamellar η-phase. The oxidation behavior has been characterized showing superior performance of ATI718PLUS® relative to alloy 718 and 720LI. The results have been used to design optimized microstructures balancing the properties required for critical rotating parts. The analysis of several test conditions show, that key properties can be altered over a wide range.
