Abstract

Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) offers a variety of methods and tools to design engineers in order to meet the challenges of modern product development processes. However, no universal and consistent approach exists to guide design engineers through the process of developing, implementing and running a KBE application. This led to the establishment of a working group within the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure). The members are from German companies and research institutes that deal with KBE applications, methods and tools. The aim is to develop a new VDI guideline that describes a methodical procedure for the implementation of a KBE application (referred to as KBE project). A unique approach is the definition of roles within a KBEproject that contribute in different manners depending on the actual project step. The most important role in this case is the knowledge engineer. The role of the knowledge engineer is described in this paper according to the VDI guideline and subsequently this description is compared with the result of a current industrial survey.
