Abstract

Using current simulation technology the simulation setup for a small antenna array (no Unit-Cell approach) generally is as follows: the complete antenna array structure is modeled in CST MWS and a port is assigned to each antenna element. The simulation can then be performed by either exciting a single element only while all others are terminated with their port reference impedance, which would e.g. yield the active element pattern, the embedded element impedance, and the TX mode element coupling S-Parameters. Alternatively the simulation can be performed using a simultaneous excitation of all ports, with a predefined phase and amplitude distribution. This yields the pattern of the complete array for the defined excitations as well as the scan impedance for every element. However, both approaches lead to a description of the antenna array in transmit mode only, but it is a well-known fact that the TX mode characteristics differ from the RX mode characteristics significantly. In our contribution we propose a Matlab – CST Co simulation framework for simulating antenna arrays in receive mode. Therefore, we developed a Matlab function which excites the complete structure using plane waves impinging on the array from various directions of interest, records the output signals of all ports as well as the Plane wave signal (using ResultReaderDLL) and finally postprocesses the outputs to get state-of-the-art frequency and time-domain characteristics for UWB antennas and antenna arrays. In the presentation we give an introduction to the problem of UWB receiving antenna array characterization, we introduce the state-of-the-art frequency and time-domain figures of merit for UWB antennas and antenna arrays, we introduce our simulation framework, and we discuss simulation results. The simulation framework Matlab code will be available to interested users for free.
