Abstract

This volume contains all papers, posters, and keynotes presented and discussed at the 7th Workshop in Primary and Secondary Computing Education (WiPSCE), held November 8-9, 2012, in Hamburg, Germany. The scope of the workshop encompasses all areas related to primary and secondary computing education research. The 2012 workshop was organized by the University of Hamburg in collaboration with ACM SIGCSE.

Research in primary and secondary computing education is a young field with strong ties to national educational systems. Nevertheless, its theories, methods, and results are internationally applicable and of interest to both researchers and practitioners in this field. We put a strong emphasis on scientific standards and international exchange of ideas. We accepted full research papers or reports, short papers, and posters abstracts. Altogether, we received 43 submissions from 12 countries. The double-blind review process followed international standards and employed review criteria in seven categories. As a result, we accepted for the proceedings 9 full papers, 1 report, 9 short papers, 14 poster abstracts as well as two invited keynote abstracts.

The conference in Hamburg was a great success. WiPSCE was attended by 68 attendees from 13 countries, with the majority from Europe (61) and the remainder from US (4), Israel (2) and New Zealand (1). Judith Gal-Ezer and Jan Vahrenhold gave us two remarkable keynote speeches on the topic of Grand Challenges in Primary and Secondary Computing Education. The authors delivered wonderful presentations that created thoughtful and lively discussions within the audience. Launching WiPSCE for the first time was supported by many members of the German as well as the international CS Education communities and we warmly thank everybody who contributed to the success of the conference.
