Abstract

There is a general research interest in upgrading the properties of mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) by incorporating biologically active ions which can be released in a dose dependent manner [1-3]. By taking advantage of the silicate network of MBGs, small amounts of metallic ions can be substituted into the network which will have an impact on the biological response, including osteogenesis, antibacterial capacity, angiogenesis or cementogenesis [4-6]. In this study, a new family of mesoporous silicate bioactive glasses doped with several biologically active ions has been synthesized. The methodology to produce these glasses was the sol-gel technique in combination with surfactant-templating and evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) processes. After successful production of the mesoporous glasses, several techniques were performed to characterize them, in terms of their mesostructure, porosity, and degradation behavior in biological fluids. Finally, undoped and doped mesoporous silicate bioactive glasses were compared in terms of their antibacterial and bioactivity response and conclusions about the synergetic effect of doping with metallic ions were obtained, with a specific focus on their potential application in the treatment of critical bone defects.
