Project details

Short description

The project explores the opportunities and challenges of collaborative, urban migration governance in African intermediary cities. It will be developed by the German Development Institute, the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, the think tank Samuel Hall and the city network United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa). Through participatory research and dialogue formats, the project will bring together local, national and international actors to develop practical impulses and policy recommendations for equal partnerships of urban migration governance in African intermediary cities.

The project partners cooperate with intermediary cities – a type of African cities that starts receiving growing attention in research and politics. Many of these cities are increasingly confronted with the consequences of climate-related migration, transit migration and rural-urban movements. At the same time, they harbor particular potential to unlock innovation and development opportunities through urban migration governance.

Funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the project will be based at the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg (CHREN) and start on November 1, 2021.
