Project details

Short description

The production of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) - which is one main constituent of concrete – is responsible for ca. 1t CO2 per metric ton of cement. OPC production accounts for 7 % of the total man made CO2 emission. Strategies to reduce the emission of CO2 are strongly recommended. A promising candidate for substitution of OPC is sulphoaluminate cement, which could cut down CO2 emission by 40% compared to OPC.

Sulphoaluminate cements are relatively new cement products and basic research knowledge is far from being complete. Wide application of sulphoaluminate cements can best be realized after implementation of a legislative framework allowing the use of the new cement.

Basic data and test methods to explain microstructure of the hardened cement paste with the properties of the manufactured concrete have to be created. The success of our project is strongly depending on suitable methods for determination of the quantity and morphology of crystalline and amorphous hydrate phases, which are supposed to be responsible for the strength development and physical properties of hardened sulphoaluminate cements.
