Abstract

Work can either stabilize or impair mental health. Thus, factors that support well-being and commitment must be considered in addition to burdens and stressors. Further, without knowledge of the mental well-being or engagement of the workers, the assessment of psychosocial working conditions remains incomplete. Long-term studies show that the lack of or variation in resources correlates more strongly with engagement, emotional well-being or health-related productivity losses than stressors. The effects differ across personality types. Methodological advances allow the development of compact screening instruments which cover all relevant constructs yet can be completed in less than 10 minutes. The second part of the article presents such an instrument, the psy50. The instrument was developed over several years in cooperation with the BKK umbrella organization, the Federal Ministry of Labour, experts and employees as part of the psyGA project.
