Abstract
Developing new imaging modalities remains a challenge. The latest developments are intelligent innovations building on technologies that have been on the market for decades. One cannot reinvent the wheel, but one can start to improve pre-existing technologies by concentrating on their week points. Fusion technologies are promising, as are applications in artificial intelligence. Any imaging modality needs to prove its reliability and stability, as well as its effectiveness and efficiency. It must also be easy to access. The expected benefit must far outweigh possible disadvantages. And it must be affordable for the health care system. There is no ground-breaking new modality on the horizon as yet—but if anyone has any ideas, please come forward!
