Abstract

Generally, hydrogen storage is the storage of a chemical substance. Yet, it is also often proposed and discussed as a form of energy storage. Since many technologies for the storage of hydrogen involve a chemical conversion anyway, it is reasonable to consider skipping the backwards conversion to release hydrogen again. If hydrogen is converted, e.g., by a chemical reaction into a hydrocarbon, it is reasonable to directly combust this hydrocarbon. Such approaches open new routes for the utilization of hydrogen energy. The applied technologies are introduced and a comparison of storage options with recovery of elemental hydrogen is presented.
