Abstract

Quite some time has passed since bachelor and master programs were introduced in the course of the Bologna Process. Changing the university when starting a master program can be seen as an opportunity to improve the situational framework conditions, especially in terms of prospective career goals. The spatial mobility of bachelor graduates can contribute to better matches concerning master programs and labor market entry implying higher wages. However, knowledge about the crossover between BA and MA programs and especially about the influence of situational framework conditions on mobility decisions of BA graduates is poor. Our research aims to address the question which individual characteristics and which regional circumstances can explain the decision of BA graduates to change their university between BA- and MA-programs. Data from the 2009 graduate study is used to analyze this crossover. The applied methods include multi-level logistic regression as data is hierarchically nested. Our results show that individual resources, like locally based business networks, as well as the size of local labor markets and related opportunity structures, can explain the probability of students changing university locations after their bachelor's degree.
