Abstract

Because of their continuously increasing efficiency, light-emitting diodes find new application areas. They are currently employed in automotive lighting for daytime running lights and rear lamps, but their usage is expanding to the main functions as high and low beam at the present time. Since 2008, Audi R8 is equipped with the first full LED headlamp, the model Audi A8 will follow in April 2010.In comparison to traditional lighting, LEDs offer not only various advantages but also a major challenge: With increasing junction temperature, their luminous efficiency and life cycle decline and passing the maximum junction temperature will even lead to a total failure. As almost 85% of the electric input is transformed to heat, thermal management becomes a critical task to be accomplished for successful application of LEDs. Therefore, suitable cooling concepts are necessary to reach a high efficiency and a long life span of the LEDs and to secure the lighting function.This paper introduces the previous findings for a systematic usage of so-called synthetic jets as an alternative to cooling of LEDs with fans. First of all the present cooling concept which is using small fans will be described. Then the generation of synthetic jets and their characteristics will be explained by means of literature survey, illustrations and numerical simulations. Their technical realization and advantages will be discussed and finally the future perspective and secure employment of LEDs in automotive headlamps will be provided.
