Abstract

The lattice Boltzmann method is an efficient and highly parallelizable approach for solving the
incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It is well suited for the simulation of complex systems,
such as fluid flow through porous media. Based on geometrically fully resolved 2D and 3D test
scenarios, we investigate the interaction of free and porous media flow using large scale lattice
Boltzmann simulations. The results provide first-principle insights into the physical processes in
the porous medium and the flow behavior at the interface region.
