Abstract

The well known phenomenon of frustrated total internal reflection can be
used to design an optical directional coupling device with a
continuously variable coupling coefficient. Such a coupler has been
designed using two crown glass prisms separated by a narrow gap filled
with air or an appropriate liquid. Good agreement of the measured and
theoretical coupling coefficients has been observed.
