Abstract

This essay seeks to take a closer look at the interrelationship between literature and the fine arts, literature and sculpture in particular, and asks about the ‘Readings of the Gigantomachy’ in the famous ‘Great Frieze’ of the Pergamon Altar and in its Ekphrasis in the Aesthetics of Resistance by the Swedish-German writer Peter Weiss. It is about a double reference of sculpture and literature. First, in the Great Frieze of the Pergamon Altar, ancient mythology or the literary narrations of the Gigantomachy are reflected. Second, the representative function of such a frieze depiction also points to its political dimensions, which should be examined in particular with regard to Peter Weiss.
