Abstract

The Federal Ministries of Economic Affairs and Energy, Transport and Digital Infrastructure and the Federal Ministry of the Interior presented the Digital Agenda 2014 - 2017 in August 2014. The catalogue of measures presented describes digital work with the help of modern IT technologies such as data mining (DM) and new development methods such as model-based systems engineering (MBSE). Until 2018, these technologies made their way into several large corporations and specialized IT companies. However, their distribution in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is still very low. This can be a major economic disadvantage for them, as the technologies are based on holistic approaches, such as systems-of-systems models and networking between customers and suppliers. The technology transfer project "Optimization-based design methodology in early phase of mechatronic product development (OptMePro)" of the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE) aims at developing methods and models for the integration of modern development methods and IT technologies for SMEs. In particular, this article presents a process model for a scenario analysis that enables SMEs to analyze their own product development process (PDP) regarding the current grade of digitization and automation. This process model characterizes the PDP, reveals automation potentials and finally suggests suitable measures for improvement. The process model is universally applicable, so that it meets the needs of as many SMEs as possible. In addition, the intermediate results of the procedure are clearly and comprehensibly visualized in order to guarantee their application in SMEs. Moreover, it ensures the individual identification of fields of action for machine learning processes, facilitates the integration of data-driven tools into modern product development processes and thus forms the basis for iterative digitization and automation of the PDP in SMEs.
