Abstract

Microtextures on the rubbing surfaces may influence the friction and wear performance of lubricated contacts. While this approach has already reached industrial application for sliding contacts with lower contact pressures, the effects for higher loaded EHL contacts are still topic of basic research. For this reason, geometrically defined microtextures, manufactured by a hot micro-coining process, were used for ball-on-disk experiments and characterized with regard to their friction and wear behavior. Numerical EHL simulation based on the full-system approach is applied, acting as a numerical zoom into the contact and contributing to a better understanding of the observed effects and phenomena. Particular attention is paid to the influence of geometrical parameters of microtextures regarding depth, lateral dimensions and position within the contact area. Hence, the importance of structural parameters and microtexture position regarding the tribological behavior is verified numerically and experimentally. Thus, it can be seen that deviations in those parameters can have a strong influence on lubricating conditions, possibly overcompensating beneficial effects induced by microtexturing.
