Abstract

This video study investigated students' statements during cooperative concept mapping with respect to their influence on individual and cooperative learning results. In total, 49 eighth grade students participated in the study and cooperatively learned about blood vessels and blood circulation in groups of three to four students. The study analyzed the interrelation of students' prior knowledge, their verbal abilities, and their statements during learning with individual and cooperative learning success. Students' talk assessed during the cooperative learning process seemed to be a relevant predictor for their performance. This result is encouraging as not only students' individual characteristics prior to learning but also the actual learning behavior influenced learning outcome. Differences in dependence of the group composition show the importance of the discourse between the group members; a factor that needs to be further studied in more detail.
