Abstract

Bioactive glasses have been widely used in the field of bone tissue engineering due to their appropriate biological and mechanical properties. In this chapter we will review recent developments in fabricating bioactive-glass-derived 3D foams (scaffolds), discussing also their structural and biological properties. The most common fabrication routes will be presented and discussed. Further key findings from in vitro and in vivo studies on bioactive glass scaffolds will be presented in order to support the concept of the use of bioactive glass in (bone) tissue engineering applications. In addition to the 'standard' silicate-based bioactive glass compositions, representative findings on novel glass compositions for biomedical use, e.g. containing therapeutic metal ions, will be highlighted. © 2014 Woodhead Publishing Limited.
