Abstract


Hierarchical modular networks are frequently encountered in biological systems and exhibit singular spectral properties, such as absence of a well-defined spectral gap and pronounced eigenvector localization. We study the relationship between such unusual spectral features and the nature of the epidemic threshold in hierarchical modular networks. By means of numerical simulation and theoretical arguments, we show that the standard relationship between the

threshold value of the spreading rate in the susceptible-infected-susceptible dynamics and the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix does not hold in this case, and we discuss a possible generalization of it, which accounts for the unique spectral features of hierarchical modular connectivity patterns.
