Abstract

Electrophoretic deposition is gaining increasing interest in the field of coatings for biomedical implants. Especially soft coatings, which functionalize the surface of metallic substrates, are in the focus of current research activities. A previous comprehensive review has shown the large variety of biopolymers and bioceramics that can be conveniently deposited and codeposited by electrophoretic deposition. This short review summarizes the latest research activities in this field and discusses, as an example, the application of EPD to obtain composite coatings in the system TiO nanoparticles/ polylactic acid. This system combines the good biocompatibility of TiO with the film forming properties of the biodegradable polymer. It was shown that the material combination enhances the flexibility and the adhesion of the coatings to the substrate, leading to soft coatings that should enable better connection between the rigid implant and the surrounding bone tissue.
