Abstract

In this study sequence stratigraphic concepts are applied to the purely continental strata of the Permo-Carboniferous Saar-Nahe Basin. The investigated portion of the basin fill comprises syn-rift strata which display a spectrum of cycles, ranging from periodicities of 2 Ma and 200-400 ka all the way down to multiples of sunspot cycles and annual seasonal couplets. On the basis of sequential position, facies associations and systematic changes in stacking patterns and facies architecture it is possible to subdivide the 200-400 ka-cycles into systems tracts. By considering the anatomy of trangressive systems tracts as well as associated synsedimentary tectonic features tectonism turns out to be an important factor in controlling sequence architecture. Nonetheless, the availability of accommodation space and the rates sediments accumulate are dependent on variations of both tectonic subsidence and climate. It is concluded that series of tectonic events, accompanied by the extrusion of volcanic products, temporarily created accommodation space by rapid subsidence of the basin floor or by damming of the hydrological outlet of the basin. This kind of tectonic influence is suggested to work most effective if subsidence events coincide with a climatically induced lake level rise.
