Abstract

This paper is an extended summary of findings of an on-going research project on the use of importance measures to improve the design and reliability of digital systems. Continued shrinking in the size of transistors makes the reliability of digital systems an important aspect to be contemplated at design time. In this paper, we propose to use reliability importance measures to complement existing reliability analysis and optimization techniques. In fact, reliability importance measures can be used within such analysis techniques as indicators of how a given component contributes to the reliability of a system. Hence, to increase reliability, one selects the most important components as candidates for the optimization or improvement of system reliability (using, e. g., hardware/software redundancy). However, in the design of digital systems, additional attributes (e.g., power consumption, timing delay, and/or cost) are important as well and, thus, require for a multi-objective optimization to investigate the available trade-offs. Our goal is to introduce a Boolean-based importance measure analysis to integrate and assist the optimization process. In doing so, we look for importance measures which are time independent, as a time-dependent approach would not be as informative as a time-independent approach for the type of problems dealt with in the research. We then illustrate a new time-independent importance measure, based on the findings in (Borgonovo, Aliee, Glaß, & Teich 2015). Also, for the purpose of investigating the cost impact of components, we illustrate a cost-aware importance measure under investigation in (Aliee, Borgonovo, Glaß, & Teich 2015b).
