Abstract

A new critical velocity equation, derived for horizontal pneumatic conveying, is compared with relations described in the literature. The comparison shows that the new dimensionless velocity group, which describes the ratio of momentum of the strand to its resistance, correctly defines conditions resulting in plugging of the pipeline. The new equation for critical velocity is a generalization of known empirical correlations which are valid only for particular regimes of variables. The blower characteristics exert a strong influence on measured critical velocities. Therefore installations designed for proving pipeline characteristics should be equipped either with a blower with a steep characteristic or with air supply controlled by a Laval nozzle. (A)
