Abstract

Population aging is one of the most important challenges in human history. Adapting this challenge involves the development of products and services for improving activity, health and quality of life in old age. The development of such products requires interdisciplinary collaboration between disciplines of aging and engineering sciences. This involves integrating the specific needs of older users into product development. The aim of this work is to describe a methodical approach combining behavioural and psychological perspectives on technology use in old age with engineering sciences. This interdisciplinary procedure is described based on the development of a bicycle for improving mobility in old age and focused on the analysis and assessment of differential user requirements. These requirements are translated into a matrix-based product description allowing product developers to derive product properties and to set the required characteristics for each of these properties. As a consequence, this approach may contribute to the improved development of innovative products in old age.
