Abstract

Examined international consistency and elucidated internationally-based clinical understanding of the chronology of increasing functional impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). 28 experienced clinicians from Germany and the US rated the stage of AD at which each of the 44 manifestations of cognitive, behavioral, or functional impairment is most clinically relevant. Data were subjected to 3 methods of metric scale analysis: equal appearing intervals, principal components, and paired comparison scaling. Finally, a single average T-score value for each item was calculated, and the 44 items were listed in rank order according to their average severity scale values. The resulting ordering and associated scale values provided a consistent and reliable description of the course of functional impairments in AD as seen by experienced clinicians in the 2 countries.
