Abstract


In general automobile manufacturers need to reduce development time and improve cost-efficiency to stay competitive. This demand rises even more due to increasing numbers of models and vehicle derivatives. Therefore the state-of-the-art development process of new vehicles rely on baselines with a wide range of ready-to-use components, such as powertrain, electronics and chassis. Hence, the same baseline can provide a platform for a range of vehicle derivatives e.g. sedan, station wagon, sports utility vehicles and sports cars. Exterior noise is one of the key components in the automotive NVH development process. On the one side the increasing number of regulations have strictly to be met and on the other side the acoustic character is of major importance for the customer and therefore for the automobile manufacturer. As the acoustic properties of the baseline model are usually well known, it seems reasonable to investigate the influence of changes of the appearance on the exterior noise. Changes usually consist of different length, height, weight, ground clearance and the general form factor. In this work we will present a statistical analysis of the exterior noise of a wide range of vehicles. Including a total of 5 baseline types and 16 different models, from sub-compact to full size luxury cars and their respective derivatives. The results can give a detailed insight into the exterior noise behavior of vehicles across different derivatives and even across several vehicle classes. Therefore the results can subsequently be applied for a prognosis of the exterior noise for the development of new models and derivatives.
